My name is Micah Myles and I am a professional performing musician and guitar teacher. I have been teaching guitar since 2010 and am c
urrently teaching at Performance Academy located in Craighall, Johannesburg. I started playing guitar in 2006 and quickly developed a deep love for the instrument. Over the years I’ve been influenced by many players from different styles of music, including artists such as: George Benson, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Santana, Django Reinhardt, The Rosenberg Trio, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Paco De Lucia, Andres Segovia, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Andy Mckee and many more. In 2008 I was introduced to Flamenco music and instantly felt a strong connection with it, the next 3 years were spent (almost) exclusively focused on getting the true Flamenco sound out of the guitar. This lead me to an awareness of music on a physical, emotional and spiritual level, and it’s many therapeutic effects body, mind and soul.
Growing up in South Africa has also helped broaden my musical vocabulary as I’m constantly exposed to local musicians and traditional african forms of music, such as Rumba, Zamba, Shangali and so on. This has lead me to have found a profound passion and respect for music, from all styles, and it’s constant evolution.
My teaching method is one of a progressive nature, whereby we move at the student’s pace, in a calm, relaxed environment, until the student has grasped whichever concept we’re working on. I teach from a set curriculum, designed to get students playing the guitar proficiently, from beginner to advanced, in whichever style they wish to learn. Lessons are tailor-made to suit each student’s individual requirements. I am a calm and understanding teacher and I try to connect with my students to help with the learning process and to help them connect with their instrument, this will allow for a much purer emotive expression when making music because, what would music be without feeling.
My intention is to help facilitate an emotional connection with the guitar. This will help you to tap into you’re natural creative potential and will lead to a sense of ingenuity, as the music you make will be coming from the heart, not just the head. At the end of the day, you are a Guitar Genius, my job is to help you realize that.
